Parkinson's Disease: Wearing-Off Forecasting Based on AI & Sensors

Parkinson's disease (PD) patients experience a range of symptoms, necessitating personalized treatment programs. Anti-PD medications are commonplace, yet a scenario can develop in which the Parkinson's medication being taken is no longer as effective as it once was. It may result in the re-emergence of symptoms prior to the next medicine intake. This is referred to as "wearing off". Over time, the duration of "wearing-off" shortens, requiring effective symptom management in collaboration between patients and doctors. We study to develop prediction models to determine the occurrence of "wearing-off" in anti-PD medicine. To create the predictive model, we explore real-world data, fitness tracker records and self-reported symptoms. However, conducting such a study in real-world settings presents challenges, including high-class imbalance and intra-class variability when collecting self-reported symptoms from patients.

Remote Patient Monitoring: Rehabilitation Evaluation of Stroke/Dementia/PD Patients

We are having less number of therapists & doctors, compared to the demands. What to do? Can we develop any automated systems to help doctors? Can we estimate various health-based scores, or scores related to rehabilitation? E.g., Stroke Impairment Assessment Set (SIAS) Score, or Berg Balance Score (BBS). Can we evaluate someone remotely from home? Remote patient monitoring has enormous demand. However, challenges are higher: What mode can we add for better evaluation? e.g., Video? Skeleton? IoT sensors? Pain? Face? Multi-modality? Sound? We are developing AI-based frameworks with hospitals and rehabilitation center for rehabilitation patients due to stroke or dementia.

Robot-/Sensor-driven Therapy for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

We are attempting to predict Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and the associated Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) scores using data from the body skeleton, head movement, eye gaze, and saliency. ASD is a neurological and developmental disorder that affects how people interact with others, communicate, learn, and behave. Scores from the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) are regarded as a standard tool for making an early diagnosis of autism. Successful treatment of ASD requires proper diagnosis and methodical therapy plans. Conventional treatments of ASD usually involve diverse intervention techniques designed by professional therapists. Unfortunately, highly trained therapists are not always readily available. Accessible therapists may sometimes lack experience and observational skills, making it difficult to assist ASD children effectively. So the question is, can we find an alternative to Standard Human Therapy (SHT) in the form of Robot Assisted or Robot Enhanced Therapy (RET)? We are developing system and methods to effectively assist RET in ASD diagnosis and therapy.

Thermal Comfort and Heatstroke

The rise in global temperatures has become a significant concern, leading to an increase in heat stroke incidents, which pose severe health consequences, including mortality. The comfort levels of indoor environments fluctuate depending on various activities performed in different situations. Heatstroke is life-threatening, with rising mortality rates attributed to increasing global temperatures. Physiological data, encompassing heart rate, body temperature, and blood pressure, provide valuable insights into the identification of patterns and trends that may signify an elevated risk of heatstroke. However, manual analysis of such data proves impractical due to its complexity and volume. Acute discernment of heatstroke symptoms remains imperative for effective interventions. We want to forecast heatstroke risk, enhancing machine learning algorithms based on physiological features. Our works promise for advancing the state-of-the-art in heatstroke prevention, augmenting the accuracy and reliability of the predictive models, and consequently, benefiting public health initiatives.

Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Mechanism

AMR is ‘the silent pandemic’ [“Research Careers in Antimicrobial Resistance”, American Society of Microbiology (ASM), Statement by Cesar Arias, Editor-in-Chief, Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy Journal (AAC), Nov. 2022. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-m1WUTafbI ]. WHO has declared AMR as a top-10 global public health threats. Antibiotic and antimicrobial resistance is the no. 3 global public health threat. Overuse and misuse of antimicrobials are a key reason for the proliferation of drug-resistant pathogens. As per WHO, ‘The world is running out of effective antibiotics’. Hence, drug-resistant infections are killing many people (e.g., ~5 million deaths per year) [WHO, May 2022]. Due to its massive importance, “WHO Antimicrobial Resistance Division”. Hence, we are working to find the inherent mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance using AI.

Mental Health & Productivity: Telework vs. Office Work on Multimodal Data

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a massive increase in the use of home/Telework. Thus, remote work styles have become the norm. 1/3rd of office employees switched to working from home due to the COVID-19 pandemic (as in 2021, as per OECD). In the fields of human-computer interaction and computer-supported cooperative work, lots of activities are going on regarding collaboration, engagement and coordination of the staffs -- their mental well-being as well as productivity. However, these are extremely difficult tasks. Working from home can have positive and negative impacts on physical and mental health, work productivity, work-life balance, and family functioning. To understand the relationship between work behaviors and physical and mental health – we need massive amounts of multi-modal data, collected from phones, wearable, and environmental elements. We are working to understand the inherent relationships.

Human Identification at a Distance in the Wild

Human identification at a distance (HID) poses significant challenges, as most traditional biometric modalities are difficult to acquire under such circumstances. However, with the increasing need for enhanced security measures, there is a growing demand for reliable methods of human identification at a distance. Gait recognition has emerged as a promising biometric modality for this purpose, as it can be captured even when faces are obscured or too small to be detected, making it valuable in scenarios where other biometric features are unavailable. Due to the pandemic, where facial masks are commonly worn in public, gait recognition becomes even more relevant as it may be the only viable biometric feature at a distance. Gait recognition has witnessed significant advancements, particularly with the advent of deep learning techniques, since its inception in the late 1990s. Human Identification at a Distance (HID) is an important research area due to its importance (especially in biometrics) and inherent challenges within this domain. To mitigate some of the constraints, we have introduced the HID challenge in 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023.

Skeleton-based Cross-view Gait Recognition

Biometrics refers to recognizing an individual based on their physiological or behavioral traits. In contrast to physiological biometrics, such as iris, fingerprint, and face, gait is a behavioral biometric modality that defines a person’s unique walking patterns. RGB image sequence, silhouette image sequence, and skeleton image sequence can be explored. The spatiotemporal dynamics of skeleton key points convey rich information against carried objects and clothing variations.

Facial Expression for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects individuals’ social interaction, communication, and behavior. Early diagnosis and intervention are critical for the well-being and development of children with ASD. Available methods for diagnosing ASD are unpredictable (or with limited accuracy) or require significant time and resources. We aim to enhance the precision of ASD diagnosis by utilizing facial expressions, a readily accessible and limited time-consuming approach. We also develop a facial expression-based ASD dataset. To the best of our knowledge, this is the largest dataset of its kind.

Nursing Activity Recognition in the Field

Nursing activity recognition has immense importance in the development of smart healthcare management and is an extremely challenging area of research in human activity recognition (HAR). The main reasons are an extreme class-imbalance problem and intra-class variability depending on both the subject and the recipient. We are exploring the CARECOM Nurse Care Activity dataset and the Heiseikai Nurse Care Activity dataset to demonstrate our method.

Annotator's Uncertainty and Relative Attributes

An uncertainty-aware estimation framework for gait relative attributes: We specifically design a two-stream network model that takes a pair of gait videos as input. It then outputs a corresponding pair of Gaussian distributions of gait absolute attribute scores and annotator-dependent gait relative attribute label distributions. Moreover, we propose a differentiable annotator-independent uncertainty layer to estimate the gait relative attribute score distribution from the absolute distributions then map it to a relative attribute label distribution using the computation of cumulative distribution functions. Furthermore, we propose another annotator-dependent uncertainty layer to estimate the uncertainty on the gait relative attribute labels in terms of a set of trainable transition matrices. Finally, we design a joint loss function on the relative attribute label distribution to learn the model parameters. Experiments on two gait relative attribute datasets demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed method against baselines in quantitative and qualitative evaluations.

Research Areas (past)

Gait against Occlusion

Gait recognition against various occlusions is very difficult task. We proposed a spatio-temporal silhouette sequence reconstruction method for gait recognition. As there are no large/medium datasets for gait with occlusion, we introduced a new dataset of 9001 subjects from a side view, where artificially 24 different occlusion patterns are created. Our proposed method can reconstruct better and hence, achieved state-of-the-art results.

Sensor-based Activity Recognition having Missing Data

Sensor-based activity recognition deteriorates while partial data are lost. Hence, we study activity recognition in the presence of data loss.

Position and Orientation Independent Deep Ensemble Network

We designed a position and orientation independent deep ensemble network (POIDEN) to classify eight modes of locomotion and transportation activities from SHL dataset. The architecture is constructed of a Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) with LSTM that is assigned the task of selecting optimum general classifiers (random forest, decision tree, gradient boosting, etc.) to classify the activity labels.

Gait Disorder Detection

We proposed a method for detecting gait disorders using RGB or RGBD camera, based on Gait Energy Image (GEI). We learnt the representative features from the GEI using convolutional autoencoder, and use anomaly detection method for detecting abnormal gait.

Action Recognition from Accelerometer Sensor Data

Elderly people are physically very weak. Most of them have to consult doctors regularly. It is tedious for both the elderly persons and doctors to stay in touch incessantly. Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is designed to keep incessant observations remotely on elderly people at a time. This WSN is comprised of many sensor nodes. For the recognition of elderly actions, accelerometer sensors are broadly used in WSN.

Earable Device for HAR

Wearable sensors are monumental for human activity recognition. We explored earables device 'eSense' multisensory stereo device for personal scale behavior analysis. We proposed an HAR framework by exploiting eSense based multi-sensory device. It has a microphone, 6-axis inertial measurement unit, and a dual-mode Bluetooth. We used eSense accelerometer sensor data for detecting head and mouth related behavioral activities.

Sensor-based Gait Challenge: Age and Gender

We employed a large wearable sensor-based gait dataset, which includes various walking patterns, having 745 subjects (357 females and 388 males), from 2 to 78 years old - as training dataset; and 58 subjects (19 females and 39 males) - as test dataset. With this dataset, a challenge was introduced in the IEEE 12th International Conference on Biometrics (ICB), 2019, where 18 teams registered from 14 countries. Finally ten teams submitted 67 solutions.

Mobility Dataset

The University of Dhaka mobility data set (DU-MD) is a human action recognition dataset consisting of 10 classes and 5000 observations, recorded using wrist-mounted sensors embracing accelerometry. The data set exhibits sufficient statistical diversity in physiological parameters and a noteworthy correlation between similar activities with coveted quantitative and qualitative features, suitable for training machine learning models. On the other hand, the wrist-mounted approach parallels the future commercial scenarios.

Activity Recognition by Using LoRaWAN Sensor

We explore LoRaWAN (LoRa Wide Area Network) sensor for human activity recognition. To support the ageing population in the world, assisted living and sensor-based human activity recognition are important research areas. In this research, we study LoRaWAN sensors data transfer ability in a real caregiving center in Japan.

Classification of Locomotion and Transportation Modes Using Smartphone Sensor Data

We explore a smartphone sensor-based benchmark Sussex-Huawei Locomotion-Transportation (SHL) dataset for rich locomotion and transportation analytics. We show a comparison of different sensor-based features for the identification of a specific activity level.

Automatic Fall Detection System for Elederly People

We used smartphones as the main component of our system. A dataset was first established and by analyzing it, an appropriate algorithm was devised. Finally, the algorithm was implemented and the system was tested and fall was detected in real-time.

Fatigue Detection Using Facial Landmarks

Detection of fatigue in human face is crucial for medical and safety purposes. Although it is a simple task for a human observer, for a computer, it is a very challenging problem. We explore to determine the presence of fatigue in a face using computer vision. We propose a method for fatigue recognition by exploiting the facial landmarks.

Visual Face Scanning and Emotion Perception Analysis of Autistic Children

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex and diverse neuro-developmental condition. The smooth pursuit experiment contains animations of objects moving horizontally across the screen and the saccadic tests contained animations of predictable and non-predictable saccades. To attain the gaze data, Tobii EyeX Controller is used and the data is processed and analyzed.

Sleep Monitoring System

Sleep monitoring is very crucial for human being since insufficient and unbalanced sleeps are often related to an individual's health state. Sleep posture impacts the quality of sleep, and it is exclusively vital for injured people. So, it is essential to study the postures and movements of the limbs during sleeping. We propose a sleep monitoring system based on ultrasonic sensors. Our system does not need any on-body sensors to wear, nor does it need any kind of additional action from the users outside the daily routine.

Development of an 8DOF Quadruped Robot

Quadruped robots can mimic animal walking gait and they have certain advantages like walking on terrain and extremely rough surfaces. A quadruped robot is designed and developed having six different movements: front, back, left, right walking, clockwise and anti-clockwise rotation.

Left Ventricular (LV) Segmentation on Cardiac Cine-MR Images

We explore segmentation algorithms applied on left ventricular (LV) segmentation on cardiac cine-MR images. The dataset used for this research is cardiac MRI dataset used for MICCAI 2009's 3-D segmentation challenge for clinical application (Sunnybrook Cardiac dataset used for the 2009 MICCAI's challenge).

Study on Alzheimer's Disease from the Ventricular Enlargement using S-MRI Data

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a major form of dementia that is generally diagnosed using clinical history and brain imaging. Structural MRI provides the opportunity to identify the changes in the brain structure. Brain ventricular enlargement is a biomarker for the AD subjects. Due to intra- and inter-operator variability, manual detection of this enlargement is predisposed to errors. An automatic detection of this enlargement is presented.
